Muscle Testing: Tuning In to Your Body's Wisdom
Did you ever wish there was a way to get a direct answer from your own body? Something that could help you bypass the constant analysis, the second-guessing, and just know what's best for you? That’s where muscle testing comes in! Also known as applied kinesiology, muscle testing is a simple yet powerful technique that lets us tune in to our body’s inner wisdom.
So, what exactly is muscle testing, and how does it work? Think of it like tapping into your body’s natural “lie detector.” It’s a way to get honest answers from our own system, revealing what might serve you best for your health, energy, and emotional well-being.

"Muscle testing is like accessing the body’s natural lie detector, providing insight into what our conscious minds might overlook.” - Donna Eden
How Muscle Testing Began
Muscle testing has been around since the 1960s when Dr. George Goodheart, a chiropractor, discovered that certain muscles weaken in response to imbalances in the body. This was the beginning of what he called applied kinesiology. Dr. Goodheart’s work combined elements of traditional Chinese medicine, chiropractic practices, and Western anatomy to create a holistic approach. He once explained, “Applied kinesiology opens up a dialogue between our physical and energetic bodies, revealing what serves us best.” Today, muscle testing is widely used in holistic health and energy healing as a practical tool to understand what our body truly needs.
What Can You Test For?
Food Sensitivities and Allergies
Muscle testing can help identify foods that might trigger sensitivities or allergies. By testing specific foods, you can get a better sense of what’s beneficial or possibly problematic for your body.
Nutritional Supplements
Muscle testing is commonly used to check if a specific supplement, vitamin, or mineral is beneficial or needed by your body at a given time. This can help you fine-tune your wellness routine.
Emotional Blocks and Trapped Emotions
You can use muscle testing to uncover hidden emotional patterns or past events that may still be affecting your current well-being. This can be helpful in energy healing practices to release stuck emotions.
Health and Body Imbalances
Muscle testing can reveal physical imbalances, such as adrenal fatigue, mineral deficiencies, or areas where the body may need extra support.
Mental Beliefs and Limiting Thoughts
It's often used to identify subconscious limiting beliefs, allowing you to uncover thoughts or patterns that might be holding you back from achieving your goals or finding happiness.
Healing Remedies
It’s commonly used to select homeopathic remedies, essential oils, flower essences, or herbs, that can aid physical or emotional healing based on individual needs.
These are just some of the many ways you can use muscle testing. It offers a simple yet powerful way to tune in to what your body, mind, and spirit truly need, helping you make informed decisions that align with your health and wellness journey.
How Muscle Testing Works
Muscle testing works by interpreting your muscles’ responses to different thoughts, foods, or questions. There are a number of different muscles tests—let's use a simple 'sway test'.
Step-by-step Instructions for the Sway Test:
1. Find a Quiet, Comfortable Spot
Ensure you are hydrated before you start, as dehyrdration can adversly affect the results of a muscle test.
Stand up straight in a comfortable, quiet area where you can relax and focus. Keep your feet about hip-width apart, and ensure there’s enough space around you to sway freely without bumping into anything.
2. Relax and Center Yourself
Take a few deep breaths to calm your mind and bring yourself into a focused, neutral state. Let your arms hang by your sides, and loosen any tension in your shoulders and back. Be Patient and Neutral: Keep an open mind and avoid expecting a particular answer. Practice consistently, and you’ll start to feel more comfortable with this process.
3. Set Your Intent and State the Question Clearly
Decide on some clear “yes” or “no” questions that you want to ask. Examples might include, “Is this supplement beneficial for me?” or “Does my body need more rest?”
4. Establish Your “Yes” and “No” Response
To establish a baseline, start by saying, “Show me a ‘yes’” out loud or in your mind. Then, observe which direction your body naturally sways. It may take up to 5 seconds for your body to move.
Next, say, “Show me a ‘no’” and observe your sway direction again. Practicing this a couple of times helps you become familiar with your body’s natural responses.
Test your yes and no responses with questions that you know are true and false. Ask questions like: "Is my name: _____ (say a name that is not yours). Then ask 'Is my name: (and say your name). Alternatively, ask if you are a certain gender. Keep asking basic questions that are definitely Yes and No answers, until you have confirmed your 'Yes' and 'No' responses.
5. Ask Your Question or Hold a Thought:
Once you feel in tune with your baseline responses, ask your chosen question, phrasing it clearly and directly. Keep your body relaxed and neutral, and allow yourself to sway without trying to control the movement.
Start with something simple, like “Does my body need more rest?”
6. Observe the Direction of Your Sway
Notice which direction your body sways in response to the question. Swaying forward generally indicates “yes,” while swaying backward suggests “no.”
7. Interpret and Trust the Response
Take note of your body’s response and interpret it based on the forward/backward sway. If you’re new to this, it might take a few tries to get comfortable, so practice with simple questions until you feel more confident.
"Our bodies know the truth before our minds do." - Dr. David R. Hawkins
It’s amazing how much wisdom our bodies hold!
The Power of Muscle Testing
Why try muscle testing? Here are a few ways it can support you:
Deeper Self-Awareness: By regularly tuning in with muscle testing, we can become more aware of our body’s unique needs. It’s like having a built-in guidance system!
Clarity in Decision-Making: Muscle testing is fantastic for gaining clarity and cutting through the mind’s clutter when making choices.
Emotional Healing: Muscle testing helps us identify emotional blocks or limiting beliefs, showing us where we might be holding onto patterns that no longer serve us.
Customized Health Insights: Whether it’s about foods, supplements, or lifestyle changes, muscle testing helps you discover what’s right for your body.
“Your body can tell you more than a test result; muscle testing reveals the wisdom within you that is often hidden from conscious thought.” - Dr. John Diamond, author of Your Body Doesn’t Lie
Listen to Your Body’s Wisdom
Ultimately, muscle testing is about forming a partnership with your body, learning to trust its signals, and gaining deeper self-awareness. Our bodies hold so much information, and we often overlook this simple yet profound wisdom in our everyday lives.
So, give it a try! Your body might surprise you with what it has to say. Just like Dr. Goodheart shared, “Applied kinesiology opens up a dialogue between our physical and energetic bodies, revealing what serves us best.” By embracing this practice, you are tapping into the power of muscle testing, opening yourself to greater alignment, healing, and trust in your own inner guidance.
