Where Grief Is Stored in the Body, Energy System & Soul

Grief, sadness and loss are part of being human.

We all experience loss throughout life in different ways. We grieve the loss of loved ones, relationships, friendships, jobs, health, financial security, dreams, identity, and chapters of life that come to an end.

Sometimes we grieve what happened. Sometimes we grieve what never happened.

We grieve:

  • what could have been

  • the future we imagined

  • words left unsaid

  • love not fully received

  • opportunities lost

  • the version of ourselves connected to what was lost

Not all grief comes from death.

Some grief comes from heartbreak, disappointment, betrayal, abandonment, loneliness, or years spent surviving instead of truly living.

Many people carry grief silently. They continue functioning while holding deep sorrow within the body and energy system, often without even realising how much emotional weight they are carrying.

Grief is part of the human experience, not a problem to fix, but a natural expression of love moving through us.

This is describing grief in its healthy, flowing form.

BUT grief does not only live in the mind. It lives in the body and unprocessed grief needs to be released from the body so it can return to its natural movement.

Stuck grief is what creates the problem.

When grief is:

  • expressed → it moves through the system (healthy)

  • suppressed → it gets stored in the body (dysregulation, heaviness, fatigue, emotional flooding, etc.)

How Grief Is Stored in the Body

When grief is overwhelming or unresolved, the body often holds onto it as tension, contraction and emotional residue. This may show up as:

  • heaviness in the chest

  • a lump in the throat

  • shallow breathing

  • fatigue

  • body tension

  • emotional numbness

  • anxiety

  • exhaustion

  • a feeling of carrying an invisible weight

Research into trauma and the nervous system continues to show that emotional pain affects the physical body deeply.

The fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds the muscles, organs and bones, can hold stress and emotional tension patterns over time. The body remembers what the heart has not fully released.

Experts like Peter Levine and Bessel van der Kolk have helped bring awareness to how unresolved emotional experiences remain stored within the body and nervous system long after the original experience has passed.

Grief & the Energy System

From an energetic perspective, grief can create heaviness, depletion and stagnation within the energy field. It is often felt strongly around:

  • the heart

  • lungs

  • throat

  • chest area

  • solar plexus

Over time, unresolved grief may affect:

  • emotional wellbeing

  • vitality

  • nervous system balance

  • ability to feel joy

  • emotional openness

  • connection to self and others

The body and energy system naturally want to heal and restore balance. But when grief is suppressed or carried for long periods of time, the system can remain stuck in protection, heaviness or emotional contraction.

Grief in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine associates grief and sorrow with the lungs and large intestine.

The lungs relate to breath, vitality and receiving life. The large intestine relates to release and letting go.

According to TCM, unresolved grief may weaken energy flow through these systems and contribute to emotional heaviness, fatigue and lowered vitality.

There is wisdom in this understanding. Grief affects both our ability to fully receive life… and our ability to release what has passed.

Inherited & Collective Grief

Not all grief begins with us. Some grief is carried through family systems, ancestral lines and collective human experiences. Many people are carrying inherited emotional patterns, unspoken family sorrow, or grief connected to generations before them.

Sensitive people may also absorb collective grief from the world around them, especially during times of uncertainty, change and emotional overwhelm. Sometimes the heaviness we feel is larger than one single experience.

Healing Grief

Healing grief is not about forgetting what was lost. It is about gently helping the body, heart and energy system release the emotional weight it has been carrying for too long.

When grief begins to clear, people often feel:

  • lighter emotionally

  • calmer within themselves

  • more open-hearted

  • more present

  • more energised

  • more connected to peace, love and life again

Lighten Your Heart

This is why I created Lighten Your Heart, a healing and clearing experience designed to gently work with grief held within the mind, body and energy system.

Through deep energetic clearing and healing frequency infusions, this experience supports the release of sorrow, heaviness and emotional residue while restoring the system with frequencies of love, peace, comfort and emotional renewal.

Because your heart was never meant to carry this much alone.
